This work is inspired by the French scenic wallpapers of the 1880s. Through digitally inserting my scenic wallpapers into large format photographs of Linden’s gallery spaces I have created fake architectural interiors that play with memory and create a fictitious architectural history. The stylized, utopian, hybrid, landscapes and environments represented in the French scenic wallpapers were intended to indulge a Western scopic desire for exotica and travel and as such, represent a variety of historical, political and social discourses. Through shifts in perspective and pictorial space, mock installation, and use of new media I aim to engage with, and problematize these representations.
